German Apple Cake with Caramel Sauce

This is my Grandma's German apple cake.  We just love this...such great memories of having this with her.  The carmel sauce is fantastic served over this.  -Kristin

3 c. flour
1/2 t. salt
1 c. oil
1/3 c. orange juice
2 1/3 c. sugar
4 eggs
2 t. vanilla
1 1 /2 t. baking soda
1 1/2 t. baking powder
5 apples, sliced thinly
5 T. sugar
2 t. cinnamon

1 c. brown sugar
1/3 c. evaporated milk
1/2 c. butter
1 T. vanilla

  • Mix together the flour, salt, oil, orange juice, sugar, eggs and vanilla and beat on low speed for 1 minute. Then increase to medium speed and beat 3 minutes more.
  • Then add baking soda and baking powder and mix 1 minute more; set aside.
  • Combine in separate bowl the apples, sugar and cinnamon.
  • Grease bundt pan and fill with alternating layers of batter and apples. A total of 3 layers batter and 2 layers of apples. Beginning and ending with batter.
  • Bake 350 for 1 1/2 hours.
  • When cooled sift some powdered sugar over top if desired.
  • Mix the remaining ingredients in a sauce pan and cook till smooth. Do not boil.
  • Serve caramel sauce over.
